Titera's Tidbit: Tell it to the Marines
Since World War II, this phrase has come to mean something like "take your problem to the marines, and they'll take care of the bad guys". Its origin is much less flattering. British sailors said that the marines on board, landlubbers to them, are so stupid that they would believe any old tall tale. Its first citation, in about 1830, is, "He may tell that to the marines, but the sailors will not believe him".

Titera's Tidbit: Maraud
In the dialect of southwestern France, a maraud is a tomcat, a creature that comes and goes as it pleases. The word came to be applied to human drifters and vagabonds, presumed to be up to no good as they wandered. It was thus extended to mean "to raid", "to plunder", rather than simply be footloose.

Titera's Tidbit: Inauguration
The history of the word inauguration can be traced all the way back to the early Roman Republic (510 BC - 27 BC). The Roman Republic was ruled by two distinct classes, the patricians and the plebeians. All major decisions, such as war, religion, appointments of officials, and commerce were decided upon by augurs. It is from the word augur that the Romans developed the word inauguratio, which is where we get the word inauguration.

Titera's Tidbit: Metabolism
An ancient Greek wrestler would have been praised for being good a metaballein, that is, "being able to throw someone over". The sense of reversal comes into the modern word "metabolism", meaning something like an utter transformation through which a foodstuff is converted into sugars and other fuels.

Titera's Tidbit: Monday
The English noun Monday derived sometime before 1200 from monedæi, which itself developed from Old English (around 1000) monandæg and mondæg (literally meaning "day of the moon"), which is cognate to other Germanic languages, including Old Frisian monadeig, Middle Low German and Middle Dutch manendach, Old High German manetag, and Old Norse manadagr. The Germanic term is a Germanic interpretation of Latin lunae dies.

Titera's Tidbit: Christmas
Also referred to as Christmas Day or Christmastide, is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that marks and honors the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. The birth of Jesus, which is the basis for the anno Domini system of dating, is thought to have occurred between 7 and 2 BC. December 25 is not thought to be Jesus' actual date of birth, and the date may have been chosen to correspond with either a Roman festival, or with the winter solstice.

Titera's Tidbit: Autopsy
In Greek, "autopsy", from the words for "self" and "sight", meant the kind of physical checkover one can do in a mirror. In medical usage, the meaning shifted from a self-inspection by someone alive to examination by a third party of a dead person - an almost complete reversal of meaning for reasons unknown.

Titera's Tidbit: Fiancé
A man who is engaged to be married is called his partner's fiancé; a woman similarly engaged is called her partner's fiancée. These words are pronounced identically in English; the separate feminine form exists because of the inflectional morphology of grammatical gender in French, where the term originated. - Congratulations Madonna & Greg!

Titera's Tidbit: Beltway
Completed in 1964, Interstate 495 makes a circle around Washington, D.C., joining several smaller highways. It was not the first ring road in history, but it became the best known as real estate salespeople in the area came to use the phrase "inside/outside the Beltway" to indicate a property location. "Inside the Beltway" later came to refer to a particular bureaucratic mindset thought to be associated with career government employees.

Titera's Tidbit: Three Sheets to the Wind
On a sailing vessel, sheets are ropes that control the sails. Typically, two sheets control the fore sail, and one the smaller aft sail, though this configuration differs from vessel to vessel. If the sheets are to the wind, it means that they're flapping about in the breeze and the sails are not under control, just as a person said to be "three sheets in the wind" - drunk, that is - steers about wildly.

Titera's Tidbit: Electoral College
It consists of 538 elected representatives who formally select the President & Vice President of the U.S. It will make this selection on December 15. The Electoral College is an example of an indirect election. Rather than directly voting for the President & Vice President, U.S. citizens cast votes for electors. Electors are technically free to vote for anyone eligible to be President, but in practice pledge to vote for specific candidates.

Titera's Tidbit: Halloween
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient Celtic pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31st, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living.

Titera's Tidbit: Fog of War
Soldiers in combat know that, even with the best intelligence, the outcome of a battle can be hard to predict and the nature of the enemy difficult to obtain. Heavily used during the Vietnam War and ever since, the phrase "fog of war" owes to the German tactician Carl von Clausewitz, who likened combat to fog in that it "gives to things exaggerated dimensions and unnatural appearance."

The distilled juice of the agave plant takes its name from a little town in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, where large cactus plantations were established to make the drink. By recently established international law, anything called "tequila" must actually come from the place, just as champagne must come from the French province of the same name.
