Titera's Tidbit: Floopy Disk
The data-storage device called the "floppy disk" was invented in 1971 by a research team at IBM headed by engineer Alan Shugart. It was 8 inches wide, only a few mils thick, and flexible, so that it wobbled in its user's hand - thus "floppy". Later iterations enclosed the material in a plastic casing, which occasioned a change of name to "diskette".

Titera's Tidbit: Seventh Heaven
Some ancient religions of the Middle East believed the afterlife consisted of seven celestrial layers, each more splendid than the one before it. The first heaven was emerald, the second silver, the third pearl, the fourth ruby, the fifth gold, the sixth jacinth (a kind of zircon), and the seventh pure white light.

Titera's Tidbit: D-Day
In the language of the military, the "D" in "D-day" means day, thus "day-day". Its use lies in the military system for timing a particular operation or campaign, so that D3H0530 might be a notation for something that happened on the third day of a battle at 5:30 in the morning.

Titera's Tidbit: Canopy
Ancient Greeks were no strangers to the misery of a mosquito bite and the dangers of malaria, so they invented the kanopion, or mosquito net, which hung over the bed like a tent. Long after it stopped serving its original useful purpose, it kept its purposeful name, which was extended in time to include the highest reaches of a tropical forest.

Titera's Tidbit: Spifflicate
The rare word "spifflicate" has nothing to do with the word "spiffy". In fact, in a sense the words are at opposite poles. "Spifflicate", which dates to 1796, means "to treat roughly, to destroy", the kind of handling intelligence agents would come to call "with extreme prejudice". As to it origins, the Oxford English Dictionary happily allows that it's a "fanciful formation".

Titera's Tidbit: Republican Elephant
The traditional mascot of the party is the elephant. A political cartoon by Thomas Nast, published in Harper's Weekly on November 7, 1874, is considered the first important use of the symbol. The cartoon depicted the Republican Party as an elephant demolishing the flimsy planks of the Democrats (the Democratic Party symbol is a jackass).

Titera's Tidbit: Democratic Donkey
According to the Democratic National Committee, the party itself never officially adopted this symbol but has made use of it. They say Andrew Jackson had been labeled a jackass by his opponents during the intense mudslinging that occurred during the presidential race of 1828. A political cartoon depicting Jackson riding and directing a donkey (the Democrat Party) was published in 1837.

Titera's Tidbit: Pennyroyal
The common name of Mentha pulegium, a kind of mint, represents a little reputation-cleaning somewhere in history, "penny" having been substituted for pulegium, which means "relating to fleas". The "royal" part of the name supposedly derives from the noble European households where "pennyroyal" was cultivated for a major medieval task - namely killing fleas by means for the plant's natural pesticides.

Titera's Tidbit: Yosemite
The original inhabitants of the area around the "Yosemite" Valley in central California were the Miwok people, who were organized into several tribes. Some Miwoks, joined by renegade members of their longtime enemy, the Paiutes, split off and moved far into the plateau interior, in the heart of what is now the national park. Their kinfolk called them "the people who kill", Yohhe'meti or Yosse'meti.
