Some ancient religions of the Middle East believed the afterlife consisted of seven celestrial layers, each more splendid than the one before it. The first heaven was emerald, the second silver, the third pearl, the fourth ruby, the fifth gold, the sixth jacinth (a kind of zircon), and the seventh pure white light.
