Titera's Tidbit: One-Sheet
In the movie industry, a "one-sheet" is the poster hanging in theaters and DVD rental shops to advertise a film. The idea is to fit all the important names -- lead actors, producer, director, writer -- onto a single piece of paper, rather than the endless list of credits that now comes with most movies. For anyone involved in a film, it's an accomplishment to get one's own name on the "one-sheet".

Titera's Tidbit: Whirligig
The pleasant-sounding word "whirligig" has been applied to all kinds of things that spin, from top to helicopter to maple seedpod. In its ealiest appearance in about 1450, whyrlegyge was an approximation of the Latin word giraculam, meaning a thing that turns -- which, of course, is just what a "whirligig" is.

Titera's Tidbit: Eke Out
"Eking out" an existence is all work and no fun, as if a living were being pulled out of the jaws of some very mean beast. Its medieval original was more forgiving, for eke out then meant "add to" -- to supplement the basic income of, say, farming, by doing handyman work, sewing, or the like. All that, of course, means work, too, but the sense of grimness and scarcity in the phrase as we use it is a more recent addition.

Titera's Tidbit: Agritourism
Introduced into English only in 2005, "agritourism" owes to the Italian original agriturismo, describing a kind of travel in which a visitor spends time -- whether a single meal or several days -- on a farm to learn about the particular food made there or in the immediate vicinity. "Agritourism" is becoming widely popular in Europe, and its practice is slowly spreading to North America as well.

Titera's Tidbit: Cool
The use of "cool" as an approving term dates back to the late nineteenth century when it turns up in both African American and African British slang. It was largely confined to British blacks until World War II when American service personnel picked it up and introduced it to the American vernacular. Back home, it spread through jazz music, early rock, and the radio, making it standard usage by the late 1950s.
