Titera's Tidbit: Carnival
In Latin, carne vale means "farewell to the flesh", a phrase uttered at the beginning of the Lenten season to indicate, first, that eating meat for the next forty days was out and, second, that other pleasures of the flesh were to be forgone during that time. The phrase came to signify the riotous party just before Lent, called Mardi Gras in French and Fasching in German. "Carnival" is now used to signify any hoot and holler.
