Titera's Tidbit: Ping
During World War II, radar operators used the word "ping" to refer to the signal that came back from and aircraft or ship, usually belonging to the enemy. It carried into the world of computers to mean sending an electronic signal to verify another computer was ready to receive data. It has been extended further to mean sending a brief e-mail to check on someone's availability for, say, lunch or a round of golf.
