Titera's Tidbit: Heifer
The Old English word heifer is a wonderful little bit of folk poetry, like whaelrad ("whale road" = the ocean) and Beowulf ("bee wolf" = bear). It probably comes from a kenning, or poetic equation, of a form such as heahfore, "high-farer", meaning something that steps high and proud, as would a "heifer", a young cow that has not yet had a calf.
