In 1919, the Russian scientist Leon Theremin developed a strange electronic instrument that allowed its player to manipulate sound waves by a simple wave of the hand, interrupting and shaping the radio signals the machine emits. The "theremin" (also called a thereminvox) has since become a staple when creating science-fiction movie soundtracks.
