In Internet lingo, a "sock puppet" is a persona adopted by someone cruising the Web, usually for nefarious reasons. A "sock puppet" might join in a discussion group, for instance, pretending to be someone seeking advice on finances or a personal relationship, but the real purpose is to elicit financial or personal information about others in the group who respond.
