In the late 1960s, American automakers introduced several makes of vehicles that had many of the specifications of racing cars but were legal to operate on the streets. The automotive press dubbed these vehicles - among them the Malibu, Camaro, and Impala - as "muscle cars" for their large and powerful engines. In recent years the term has been revived and extended to more modern makes.
