Titera's Tidbit: Dibs
In an old Scottish game called dibstones, usually played with sheep knuckles, children captured one another's knucklebones by calling, "Dibs!" The usage meaning something like "I claim it as mine" derives from this call, but it doesn't appear in American English until 1932 in the phrase "get dibs on".
