Titera's Tidbit: Cayenne Pepper
The island of Cayenne lies off the coast of French Guiana, on the nothern shoulder of South America. Its name comes from the Tupi Indian kyinha, which means, literally, "hot pepper". The pepper grows abundantly on the island. It was introduced to Europe with the place name attached, redundant though it might be. "Cayenne pepper" is literally "hot pepper pepper".
