Titera's Tidbit: Churl
In medieval England, a "churl" was a farmhand. In a familiar process whereby things rural and working class become somehow bad, the word -- also the origin of the proper name Carl -- came to mean someone with bad manners; layered onto that now is the suggestion of ingratitude for favors done, so that a "churl" is an ungrateful boor.
