Titera's Tidbit: Detroit Tigers
Founded in 1901, this Detroit baseball team wore yellow and black socks, apparel said to have inspired the team's name. In fact, the city had fielded a military unit during the Civil War, the Detroit Light Guard, nicknamed the Tigers. When the club was founded, the owners approached the unit's veterans and asked permission to borrow the name, which was instantly granted.
