Titera's Tidbit: Detroit Tigers
Founded in 1901, this Detroit baseball team wore yellow and black socks, apparel said to have inspired the team's name. In fact, the city had fielded a military unit during the Civil War, the Detroit Light Guard, nicknamed the Tigers. When the club was founded, the owners approached the unit's veterans and asked permission to borrow the name, which was instantly granted.

Titera's Tidbit: Hip-Hop
An offshoot of funk and Jamaican dub music containing elements of rap but not the same as rap itself , "hip-hop" may take its name from a 1980 song by the new wave band Blondie: "And you 'hip hop' / And you don't stop." Alternatively, it may just be the approving word "hip" with an off-rhyming repetition.

Titera's Tidbit: Hesitate
He who hesitates is lost, the adage goes. At root, "hesitate" comes from the Latin verb haerer, meaning "to stick fast", which also turns up in our word adhere.

Titera's Tidbit: As If!
In the language of a certain class of teenage girls of Southern California's San Fernando Valley, the expression "as if!" is a nice bit of shorthand for constructions such as "as if I would ever go out with him" or "as if I would ever be caught dead wearing that dress". Young speakers far outside the region now use the term, popularized by Frank Zappa's song "Valley Girl".

Titera's Tidbit: Cheap
To an Englishman living in Chaucer's time, someone who was "cheap" was skilled at the art of bargaining, at cheapien, which meant simply the business of buying and selling. Only in modern times did the admirable quality of finding a bargain come to mean tight-fistedness.
