The twenty-third state, admitted to the Union on March 15, 1820, takes its name from a now little-used word meaning "the mainland", referring to the continental country that lay behind the hundreds of islands dotting the coast. A royal charter dating to 1620 refers to the area as "the Province of Maine", and the shortened name has remained in use ever since.
