Titera's Tidbit: Spifflicate
The rare word "spifflicate" has nothing to do with the word "spiffy". In fact, in a sense the words are at opposite poles. "Spifflicate", which dates to 1796, means "to treat roughly, to destroy", the kind of handling intelligence agents would come to call "with extreme prejudice". As to it origins, the Oxford English Dictionary happily allows that it's a "fanciful formation".
