In the early 1970s, African American pop culture hailed a car heavily chromed and styled as a "pimpmobile". The term languished until the 1990s, when hip-hop artists resurrected it. It has since spilled out into suburban speech, where it has the same sense of modifying a vehicle for the sake of appearance.

Titera's Tidbit: Mata Hari
Accused of spying for Germany and executed in 1917, Margaretha Zelle took her stage name from the Indonesian words mata, "eye", and hari, "day" - that is, "eye of the day", or sun. At the time, the Netherlands ruled Indonesia, and the femme fatale liked to say she was descended from Javanese royalty, which unfortunately didn't give her diplomatic immunity before the firing squad.

Titera's Tidbit: Lady Banks Rose
Sir Joseph Banks (1744-1820) collected hundreds of new plant species while accompanying Captain James Cook on the first voyage of the Endeavour. Knighted for his contribution, he transformed the magnificent Kew Royal Botanical Gardens into one of the world's great plant collections. The flower genus Banksia was named for him, and the "Lady Banks rose" was named to honor his equally energetic wife, Dorothea.

In 1927, an employee at the Southland Ice Company in Dallas, Texas, began to sell bread, milk, and eggs on Sundays and at night when regular grocery stores were closed. He named the impromptu store "Tote'm". Southland went on to establish other stores in Texas, open from 7am to 11pm, and renamed those stores to reflect those expanded hours in 1946. The name remains, even though most 7-Eleven stores are now open around the clock.
