Made famous by the late journalist Hunter S. Thompson, "gonzo", supposedly derived from Portuguese, means a kind of decidedly non-objective reporting in which the reporter is the madcap center of the action. It probably derives from the beatnik expression "gone", meaning "extremely cool".

This popular blend of Caribbean dance and musical styles comes from a blend of Jamaican reggae and the Spanish ton, "sound". The origin of reggae is unknown, but may owe to a slang term for "fight", rege-rege, even though so much of the music praises peace and love.

Titera's Tidbit: Elixir
Now meaning a liquid that has magical or curative effects, "elixir" followed a curious route. From the Greek xeros, meaning "dry" (as in xerography and xeriscape gardening), it entered Arabic as al-iksir, "the dry thing", presumably referring to a powder of some sort. It returned to various European languages sans the dry sense.
