"Greed" is one of the few words to enter English from the Gothic language, which was spoken in scattered pockets of eastern and nothern Europe until the ninth century. Its original form, gredas, meant "hunger", a sense that later came to be applied to a kind of insatiable hunger of the soul.

Dutch sailors, back in the days of tall masts, called a ship that had been so thoroughly overhauled as to be almost brand-new spiksplinternieuw, "new in every spike and splinter". Their British counterparts took up the phrase as a verb, "to spic and span", meaning to clean and renovate thoroughly. The phrase thus entered American vernacular, helped along by a household detergent of the same name.

Sip of the Day - How to Quickly Restart Windows

In 1930, Harland Sanders founded a diner called the Sanders Court and Cafe - a bit grand, since it was located in the front room of a gas station. He built his clientele by serving the fried chicken that would form the basis for an international chain, launched in 1957, called Kentucky Fried Chicken. In the 1990s, when all things fried became suspect, the company took the emphasis off that important word by implementing the abbreviation "KFC".
