Related to the Old-English word bruin and the Norse bjorn, the word "bear" represents a familiar linguistic process in which something that may be dangerous is not named directly, for fear that to speak of the devil will make him appear. That thing was called ursus in Latin, arctos in Greek, rktos in Sanskrit, and so forth - but in English it was called "bear", with an orginal meaning of "brown thing".
