Titera's Tidbit: Alzheimer's Disease
Alois Alzheimer, a Bavarian neurologist who died in 1915, once treated a middle-aged patient experiencing severe memory loss. When the woman died in April 1906, ALzheimer conducted an autopsy and described what he called amyloid plaque, which caused the disruption of electrical signals in the brain. The condition named for him began to appear in medical textbooks in 1911, and it remains a matter of concern nearly a century later.
