Titera's Tidbit: Black Box
Aviation shorthand for the device more formally called a flight data recorder (FDR), the "black box" was invented in 1954 and put into service in 1957. In the laboratory, FDRs were dark gray or black, standard issue for test equipment, but it was quickly noted that it would be easier to retrieve a brightly colored object. Thereafter FDRs were painted basketball orange, but they retain their old name.
