Titera's Tidbit: Tell it to the Marines
Since World War II, this phrase has come to mean something like "take your problem to the marines, and they'll take care of the bad guys". Its origin is much less flattering. British sailors said that the marines on board, landlubbers to them, are so stupid that they would believe any old tall tale. Its first citation, in about 1830, is, "He may tell that to the marines, but the sailors will not believe him".
