In Latin, septem means "seven" and septimus means "seventh"; September was in fact the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 153 BC, when the first month changed from Kalendas Martius (1 March) to Kalendas Januarius (1 January).

Titera's Tidbit: Scientist
In 1833, British geologist William Whewell coined "scientist", a derivation from the Latin scientia, meaning general knowledge, to indicate a kind of nonspecialist practitioner in science. The term took some years to catch on. In 1840, Whewall wrote, "We need very much a name to describe a cultivator of science in general. I should incline to call him a 'Scientist'." It was not until the 1870s that it became popular.
