The original inhabitants of the area around the "Yosemite" Valley in central California were the Miwok people, who were organized into several tribes. Some Miwoks, joined by renegade members of their longtime enemy, the Paiutes, split off and moved far into the plateau interior, in the heart of what is now the national park. Their kinfolk called them "the people who kill", Yohhe'meti or Yosse'meti.
