In Latin, septem means "seven" and septimus means "seventh"; September was in fact the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 153 BC, when the first month changed from Kalendas Martius (1 March) to Kalendas Januarius (1 January).

In parts of rural England, it was once customary for poultry farmers to set a pottery egg inside hens' nests to encourage them to lay eggs more abundantly. Something akin to the golden-egg-laying goose, the concept translated to the human household. If someone set aside some money to meet some future need, then others in the household might be encouraged to add to the savings.
