Titera's Tidbit: Fellow
In the ninth century, waves of Danish invaders settle in what is now northern England, where some 1,400 villages bear Scandinavian names to this day. Though fierce, the Danes were lawful people, and they introduced their legal ideas to the conquered islanders. One such notion was that someone who lay down a fee for a property was its rightful owner or shareholder; such a person was called a felagi, "fee-layer", whence "fellow".
