This learned word, which almost always modifies "struggle", originally meant "fought to the death" or "exceptionally murderous". When the great dictionary maker Samuel Johnson examined it, though, he mistakenly concluded that the inter- element meant "between", as in a struggle that is mutually destructive. The word has that sense today.
