Titera's Tidbit: Nothing is Certain but Death and Taxes
The familiar form of this maxim owes to Benjamin Franklin, but he borrowed it from one of his favorite writers, Daniel Defoe of Robinson Crusoe fame. In 1726 Defoe wrote, "Things as certain as death and taxes, can be more firmly believed" than more ethereal thinks like the existence of an afterlife. Franklin's statement, from 1789, is, "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."
