Since the beginning of the industry, computer software manufacturers have been in the habit of announcing products that fail to appear from the laboratory on the promised date. Microsoft's Vista operating system, for instance, once code-named Longhorn, had been anticipated for several years before arriving at the beginning of 2007. Until they become real - if they become real - such phantom products carry the resonant label "vaporware".
