Titera's Tidbit: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
This nautical term carries the same meaning at sea as it does on land, something on the order of "having no good alternative". The phrase is thought to have entered English from an Italian translation of the Greek poet Homer, who wrote of Odysseus crossing the treacherous passage between Scylla and Charybdis, a real place off the coast of Sicily.
